Riviera Maya is home to the Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve and the second longest underwater cave system in the world. Cenote fees and ejido permits apply, and some sites require advance booking with the ejido. Cavern Diver is the only certification level needed to dive the cenotes without a guide running the line. Diving is possible year-round. Green turtles are resident, and hawksbill turtles and loggerhead turtles are occasionally seen. Bull sharks are seen from November to March, and whale sharks from June to September.
